Self- care in our ‘new normal’: A conversation with Francesca White, Founder of The Beauty Triangle + Health & Beauty Editor-at-large for TATLER
Hi and welcome to our new blogpost!
Quick thank you: Isabella and I have been live for one month now which is incredibly surreal. This month has felt like 2 minutes and 2 years all at once! We are so unbelievably grateful for all of the support so far and we can’t wait for what the future holds.
With the lockdown announcement and the fact that this has been such a hectic month already, we felt that the most important topic to cover right now is self-care.
Taking time to really focus on our physical, mental and spiritual health has never really been more important. So many families, including our own, have been through a lot during the last 7 months and it can feel really overwhelming. Building a sustainable and grounding self-care routine is what has helped me, and I am sure many others, to find balance.
Self- care extends far beyond face masks, wine and bath bombs btw…even though these things are an incredibly fun side of it ;)
We thought it only fitting that we discuss this topic with one of our fave, new beauty and wellness brands: The Beauty Triangle (who we have partnered with for November). We asked the founder, Francesca White (Health & Beauty editor-at-large at TATLER magazine), all about her own self- care tips and what it means to her.
- Hi! Can we start with what The Beauty Triangle is all about?
We started The Beauty Triangle as a way to get people talking about their health and wellbeing – but also to have the conversations that no one was having. No topic is off-limits: we discuss everything from breast health to injectables; menopause to anxiety - while always responding to what’s topical, and what modern audiences need to hear. We want to educate, but also to empower: which is why we believe in bringing together the very best practitioners in the UK, to put genuine information out there. Doing so right now means we have to be creative - our monthly in-person discussions have morphed into webinars, socially-distanced and outdoor events, enabling us to stay connected to our community however we can. And we’ve also turned them into podcasts, so you can stay informed, wherever in the world you are.
- What does self-care mean to you?
Self-care is about taking a moment to do something for ourselves – which is something we all struggle with from time to time. So often we’re overwhelmed by the demands of our everyday lives, our careers, deadlines, or friends and family… that prioritising “us” slips further and further down the list. But it doesn’t need to be complicated, and it doesn’t have to cost the earth: it could be an at-home yoga class, reading a good book or lying in the bath with a hair mask on.
- What self-care rituals do you have, if any? Has this changed during Covid 19?
We’re firm believers in the power of a daily routine! Hot water and lemon first thing (always followed by a strong cup of coffee). Body brushing, post-shower – it’s an invigorating way to wake up the skin, plus it leaves your limbs so smooth. An afternoon walk is a great way to blow away the cobwebs and beat mental fatigue… and a nice, skin-refining peel once per week. We love Peel2Glow from Get Harley which gets skin beaming in minutes.
- How can we incorporate self-care into our everyday routine?
Sometimes it’s less about “making” the time and more about supercharging it. If you’re watching TV, give yourself a face massage. If you’re doing errands around the house, do it with a face mask on. If you want to catch up with a friend, go for a walk while you chat. Always look for opportunities to multitask!
- How does skincare play a role? Do you have any routines or products that you live by?
Definitely! Especially during lockdown, when you’ll be spending more time stuck indoors with the central heating on. When it comes to skincare, less is more… which means a great cleanser (our favourite is Dr Levy Micro-Surfacing Cleanser), a super-hydrating HA-based serum (we love NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex) and a brightening antioxidant (try SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic). Always SPF - we swear by Heliocare 360. And don’t leave the house without hand sanitiser – elxr’s is the best, of course!
- Given the shift from office to 'work from home', do you have any tips on how to care for ourselves and maintain our work/life balance?
Working from home is sometimes a blessing, but sometimes a curse. Don’t move around the house – instead, find a “zone” where you can work quietly, without interruption. Take breaks when you can – walk around, do some stretches, drink a big glass of water (we frequently forget). And make a list: it helps you to focus on, rather than panicking about, what it is you actually need to get done. Plus, crossing things off a to-do list is enormously satisfying.
We also asked Francesca about resources that she recommends in the self-care space e.g. books, podcasts, products, brands etc. You can sign up to our newsletter on our homepage to get exclusive access to her selection of favourites!
Stay Safe everyone x
